Modern Tie Dye: How to Dye Nylon

Tie-dye has been making a big comeback. Shibori (Japanese dyeing techniques) has been making a splash as well. Big brands have been jumping on the trend, and teens have been diy-ing sweaters and shirts on tik-tok all quarantine. There are many ways to dye clothing, but what about items made from nylon or protein fibers, like fur, wool and silk?

Well, apparently you can now dye your own tights, socks, and anything made of nylon / spandex from the comfort of your home, using professional grade acid dyes. Here is the easy 4 step process on how you use Color Pills:

Let’s move into the fun part! How to dye.

*The garment you are dyeing must be made out of nylon or nylon / spandex.

Or any protein fiber such as silk or wool.

• Make sure your garments are clean before you dye them.
• Find a cooking pot large enough to fit the garment you want to dye so that it completely submerges it with water.
• Drop your color pills in the water and stir until they are completely dissolved. (the casing will dissolve, or alternatively, you can pop them open and pour the contents directly in the water if you choose)
• Add your fabric or garments into the water and bring them to a boil
• Once boiling add a ½ cup of white vinegar
• Stir constantly and boil for 30 minutes to obtain an even color.
• The longer you boil it the deeper the shade
• Once you achieve your desired shade take it off the fire, bring into the sink and rinse your garments with cold water until the water is clear.
• Add fabric softener to make your garments extra soft (optional)

Please note: When you want to launder it, try to wash it on it’s own or with similar colors to prevent bleeding.
