How I: “Opened an Art Gallery”
A 5 Step, Easy To Follow Guide
By: M. Dorsett
I don’t remember the exact age I was when I fell in love with art. I do recall not being very interested even up to my early twenties, but at some point I must have saw a painting in a different way, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
My first “painting” was actually a gift to me from my grandpa. I begged him to buy me Norman Rockwells The Problem We All Have and he did. 💛 Albeit a print, it was a big moment. My current art collection is mostly paintings, and photographs. Those are the types of art I really enjoy experiencing and looking at. Sculptures too, but those come with complications like where to put them and how to get them delivered.
I consider myself a ‘youth art collector”. Purchasing art made by youth makes sense for me and has multiple benefits. Typically it’s affordable. Plus nothing beats seeing the joy of a child when you tell them you want to buy their work and give them the cash.
Of course I have extreme desires for pieces that I am utterly obsessed with, and are far out of my price range. Like Willem Kooning Woman. Some of the scariest times of my life in the past few years have been when art is priced within my “you have enough to buy it” but “you can’t really afford it” range.
